The Ontario Subacute Hospital was envisioned as a response to the healthcare demands during the COVID-19 pandemic, aimed at providing specialized care for such patients. Designed with a welcoming north-side entrance complete with a canopy-covered walkway, the hospital strives to offer a comforting and friendly first impression to patients and their families. With distinct zones for adults and children positioned on the east and west sides respectively, the design focuses on accessibility, visibility, and comfort, redefining the traditional hospital environment into a more humane and inviting space.

The primary challenge was to design a hospital that balances the clinical needs of a subacute facility with the psychological well-being of its patients. It needed to provide both visibility for family members to monitor their loved ones and privacy for patients, all while ensuring a safe and sterile environment. Additionally, transforming the typically sterile and intimidating atmosphere of a hospital into a more welcoming and soothing space was a significant design challenge.

The architectural layout features separate wards for adults and children, with transparent yet private spaces allowing parents to check on their children without compromising privacy. Two atriums are included to offer patients fresh air and a sense of openness, breaking the monotony of prolonged hospital stays. The central dining and multi-functional area, with its high ceilings and skylights, allows natural light to enhance the space, creating a nurturing environment. Frosted glass barriers and dynamically shaped, organic forms are used throughout to soften the architectural lines, presenting a more natural and comfortable atmosphere to alleviate the typical harshness associated with hospital settings.
